MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT ON THE PASSAGE OF PROP47 BY THE INDY COUNCIL
03/31/2015
Our collective membership is grateful to the Indy City County Council for the bipartisan passage of Proposal #47 which funds critical equipment needs for the IMPD. These steps are funded with revenues made available by the increase in the Public Safety Tax and we firmly believe these dollars should be used for public safety needs. We appreciate our elected officials putting politics aside and making this happen for the betterment of Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police has worked for the past three (3) years to positively bring forth solutions to fill the funding gap in public safety so that citizens and visitors alike may enjoy the level of service they have come to expect in our city. With the support of taxpayers and their elected representatives, we have sustained an increase in the Public Safety Income Tax to fund hundreds of new police officers in the coming years. With this ordinance critical needs of the police department’s infrastructure will be addressed to support these additional officers. Additional benefits have transpired that has resulted in the hiring of police officers in our neighboring towns, updated fire apparatus, the hiring of additional prosecutors and support staff, and the move toward stronger community policing efforts.
I would like to thank our membership and their families for your steadfast support for these legislative objectives.
Fraternally,
Rick Snyder, President
