Statement on Veto Override Vote from the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #86
April 20, 2015
We are pleased by the outcome of tonight’s vote to override the Mayor’s Veto of Proposal 47. This bipartisan action by the City County Council demonstrates our collective ability as a city to put politics aside and rise to the challenges of our time.
For three years, the Fraternal Order of Police has worked in good faith to collaborate with our departmental leaders and elected officials to responsibly tackle the financial challenges of our city while also placing a premium on the value of the overall public safety for our residents and visitors.
We respect the legislative process and recognize the power of the Mayor to exercise his veto authority. However, we also believe in the voice of the people and tonight the people’s voice was heard resoundingly through their elected representatives.
As a result, the IMPD now has the funds to appropriate for the purchase of 100 additional patrol cars, repair engineering needs of the firearms training range, and make the necessary infrastructure improvements at the police training academy site.
The action of the Council now ensures we will we seize this moment and uphold the expectation of Indianapolis tax payers who have provided these additional dollars for public safety needs.
Finally, we want to thank the residents of Indianapolis for their steadfast support of their police officers.
